Dear reader,
What does an ounce of gold have to do with exhaust emission standards? Quite a lot, as it turns out, because in order to get to the gold, plenty of drilling, excavating and digging is required. Since January 2015, engines in the off-highway sector, so including gold mines, have been subject to the EPA Tier 4 emission regulations in North America. One of the articles in this edition of MTU eReport illustrates the work of the Atlas Copco DM45 blast hole drill at the Wharf Gold Mine in South Dakota. The drill is driven by the first MTU Series 1600 mining engine in North America. It complies with the Tier 4 emission requirements, is compact because it does not require an exhaust gas aftertreatment system, and – importantly for mine operators – it is dependable and durable.
