HSH Nordbank and König & Cie. take Marenave Schiffahrts AG public
Hamburg/Kiel, November 10, 2006 ‑ HSH Nordbank and König & Cie. GmbH & Co. KG have developed a new product, Marenave Schiffahrts AG, for institutional investors and have taken it public.
Marenave Schiffahrts AG is the first listed ship-investment company in Germany in the legal form of an AG and is equipped with EUR 150.05 million equity capital. It was set up to provide institutional investors with an option for long-term investment in the shipping market and thereby for diversifying their portfolios. As an international provider in the container shipping and tanker-charter businesses, the company is primarily engaged in buying, selling and operating ocean-going vessels and concluding charter agreements.
“HSH Nordbank has, together with König & Cie. and for the first time in Germany, set up a com-pany giving institutional investors an opportunity for equity investment in a diversified shipping portfolio. As is already the case with our extensive securitization of ship loans, we are thereby demonstrating a successful combination of comprehensive know how in both the shipping and capital markets. HSH Nordbank is thus again positioning itself as an innovative developer of customized capital-market products,” says Eckehard Dettinger-Klemm, Management Board member responsible for the Bank’s capital market activities. Tobias König, managing partner in König & Cie. and CEO of Marenave Schiffahrts AG’s management board adds: “Together with HSH Nordbank, we have realized the idea of a shipping product for institutional investors in resolute fashion, thereby enabling institutional investors to benefit from the extensive experi-ence which we have previously proven in the business of retailing closed-end funds. In the years ahead, we will apply our knowledge of the sector and our wide-ranging contacts in the world's shipping markets to establishing ourselves in the market as managers of Marenave Schiffahrts AG and to successfully developing this business.”
As the world’s largest provider of ship finance, HSH Nordbank has comprehensive expertise in financing and structuring shipping-industry transactions. HSH Nordbank’s wholly-owned sub-sidiary, HSH Gudme Corporate Finance GmbH, assisted in the product development. “Together with König & Cie., we have paid particular attention to developing an investment concept based on what is known as “tonnage tax” for institutional investors,” says Dr. Jens Rohweder, project manager at HSH Gudme Corporate Finance. “Our aim is to enhance Germany as a market for the shipping business. We regard Hamburg in particular as an outstanding setting for such pro-jects, which is also one of the reasons for this listing on the Hamburg Stock Exchange."

Some 4,400 of the bank’s employees provide corporate and high net-worth clients around the globe with premium bank products and services.
