October 2009 ‑ New Zealand. In October Transas Marine Pacific Pte Ltd. together with its partner Electronic Navigation Ltd. completed second phase of the project to supply Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) Engineering School with sophisticated simulator suite. For this project, the existing complex was extended with the secondary Instructor Room, ANZAC frigate machinery control room (MCR) and Main Power System (MPS) room.
Depending on a training goal, the simulator will be used in various configurations. The connection of an integrated bridge simulator with engine room simulator allows 'whole ship' evolution training to be conducted, exercising communications between the bridge and engineering departments. For Pre Joining Training (PJT) and qualification of personnel prior to taking up their positions onboard this new, technically sophisticated ANZAC frigate a full mission configuration will be used. For individual or group training a multiple workstation generic classroom trainer could be used, while onboard training, assessment and distance learning is facilitated by the use of laptop computers.
ANZAC machinery control room is equipped with 40'' touchscreen panels instead of the tradition real hardware. In addition to the cost efficiency, the solution provides realistic presentation of equipment and possibility to reconfigure on the run for different ships with different controls.
3D virtual models are used to operate the system controls and valves at the Local Operating Posts (LOPs). The trainee can move within the virtual engine room, choose an LOP and operate systems using pop up control panels. The ANZAC simulator like already installed OPV simulator offers a new way of visualising the engine room environment: the trainee selects a start and finish points, after that a video from a real vessel is displayed showing a walk-through to the destination. On arrival the trainee can operate the selected local operation post.
The components of the ANZAC simulator may operate both as separate training systems and as a total ship simulator. A combination of the Frigate MCR, local operation posts and bridge forms a total frigate simulator that can be used for crew resource management.
