Tourism and its impact: Polar tourism in Arctic and Antarctic regions has rapidly increased in recent decades. This chapter summarizes the development of polar tourism in numbers, forms of activities, and future trends. Polar tourism has already caused environmental changes. Further changes are expected with growing tourism and through shipping accidents. In terms of technical practice and visitor guidance, the management of the tour operators is determining whether tourism has a negative or positive impact on the environment. The conclusion recommends co-existence of tourism and environmental protection. A sustainable tourism concept for both Polar Regions is needed.
