The future of drive technology was the topic of this year‘s Summer Symposium „Propulsion Experts meet at RENK – Innovative Trends in Marine Drive Trains“ held on 7 and 8 June at RENK AG in Augsburg. The focus was on trends and developments in drive technology, with specific reference to marine applications. Eleven lectures delivered by internationally renowned experts provided the inspiration for an exchange of ideas on the current status of marine drive technology and application options available. Over 130 participants discussed strategy and theory, but not only that: in the Augsburg plant hall, guests from around the world were amazed to find the comparatively extremely quiet low-vibration heavy-duty drive mechanism, which more than merits this description: 6.5m long, 12m wide and 3.2m high, weighing a total of 137t and designed for transmission performances up to 29,000 kW.
The comparatively extremely quiet low-vibration heavy-duty gearbox was developed for the F125 frigate class in the German Navy being able to stay two years at sea without any embarkation.
Founded in 1873 as a mechanics workshop for producing gear wheels, RENK is now a globally recognised development and production company for premium quality special drive mechanisms, drive technology components and inspection systems. At its Augsburg plant, this leader of the global track vehicle drive mechanism market and manufacturer of highly demanding special drive mechanisms focuses on building heavy-duty drive mechanisms for both maritime and stationary applications. One example is the multi-megawatt drive mechanism for offshore wind farms.
