What could be the energy of the future?

Based on well-known resources of mainly carbon fuels of different kinds,it could be natural gas, before hydrogen (H2)really comes to mind. But all carbon- fires finally release unwanted CO2,or H2O respectively when H2 is used.

The sustainability aspect of power generation is receiving greater priority as concern over the future impact of CO2 emissions on global warming increases and fossil fuel reserves decline. In January, we raised the question: What could be the energy of the future? (See HANSA 01/2003, page 43‑47.) In respect of environment- friendliness, we answered in a probably a little bit futuristic way: hydrogen.

Currently, hydrogen seems to be the cleanest energy, although it is the most expensive one. One ingenious advantage is the change from a combusting into a chemical process: From hot combustion into cold chemical reaction. Exhaust products are not CO2 any longer, hydrogen reaction releases only harmless H2O. But various readers’ reactions told us, that a step towards hydrogen is probably a very expensive and futuristic one.
