…Further concentration of shipbuilding in Asia
With the production of new ships running at a very high level the total world order book has started to decline. According to Lloyd’s Register/ Fairplay “World Shipbuilding Statistics” 9.4 mill cgt were completed in the first half of 2002 but only 6 mill cgt were ordered. The order book, which stood at 75 mill gt/48 mil cgt mid 2001, shows 68 mill gt one year later.
Last year’s comment was written a few days before the 11th of September. This day has not changed all but it has severe effects on some segments of world shipping and shipbuilding. Cruise shipping and container transport, two segments already suffering from high growth of capacity and a weakening world economy, felt the restraint of people regarding consumer goods and travelling even more. In the tanker and dry bulk carrier markets the direct dependence of new ordering on good charter rates is still visible. Whereas last year, tanker owners were earning much money and bulker rates were going down, this year the situation is reversed. Therefore, the interest in new tankers is dwindling but bulkers are requested again.
The main ship types on order are crude oil tankers (42 mill dwt/8.8 mill cgt ‑ nearly unchanged), bulk carriers (18 mill dwt/4.6 mill cgt) and container ships (13 mill dwt/8.1 mill cgt). Compared to last year, this is a sharp decrease in bulk and container tonnage. Based on cgt the order book figures indicate that container vessels provide again less work to the shipbuilders than crude oil tankers but still much more than bulk carriers. The fourth cgt tonnage rank is now attributable to LNG tankers, with 3.8 mill dwt/4.1 mill cgt. This is not so much owed to the decrease of other types than to the unprecedented extension of the LNG fleet. Caused by the lack of new contracts the tonnage of cruise vessels on order lost more than 20 per cent to 3.8 mill cgt. They fell back to the sixth rank because the chemical tankers are also aggregating more than 4 mill cgt. The ranking of product and chemical tankers is difficult to fix because of the growing number of combined chemical/product carriers
